Pre-Conference Program

In the lead up to the IFS Conference 2020, delegates have the opportunity to participate in one of three Study Tours as well as six different options for one day Practice Exchange Tours.

Options, dates and pricing are listed below - These items must be selected when registering for the conference.


Study Tours

The three Study Tours outlined below are designed not only to provide an in-depth view of what works to create community change in the Australian context, but give participants a glimpse of regional areas outside the Sydney Metropolitan Area. We will be visiting local Neighbourhood Centres, meeting staff and participants of community-led projects as well as doing a bit of sightseeing.

Study Tours

These small group tours will provide opportunities to:

  • See how Neighbourhood Centres deliver services
  • Compare and discuss community development/change strategies
  • Enjoy the Australian landscape and visit some local attractions
  1. Study Tour: Multicultural NSW

    Australia is a multicultural nation and the Wollongong/Illawarra area is a prime example of how people live together and make the idea of ‘multiculturalism’ work.

    Tour details:

    • Wednesday 5 August to Friday 7 August (3 days).
    • Sydney to Wollongong return - Travel 120km to the beautiful south coast.
    • Study Tour package includes transport, accommodation and breakfast.
    • Cost: $550
  2. Study Tour: Rural Meets Urban Expansion

    The new growth area of the Central Coast and Lake Macquarie just north of Sydney has some high density urban areas as well as small outlying hamlets. Explore how Neighbourhood Centres work in these different environments.

    Tour details:

    • Wednesday 5 August to Friday 7 August (3 days).
    • Sydney to Newcastle and Port Stephen's Return - Travel 216km along the coastal waterways and lakes north of Sydney.
    • Study Tour package includes transport, accommodation and breakfast.
    • Cost: $550
  3. Study Tour: Disaster & Emergency Management

    Australia is a country ravaged by floods, bushfire and drought. This small group tour will visit various Centres that have had to tackle the effects of these emergencies on their local community. Explore how to plan for and recover from these devastating events and build community resilience.

    Tour details:

    • Tuesday 4 August to Friday 7 August (4 days).
    • Sydney to Parkes via the Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains return - Travel 360km over the Great Dividing Range to Western Plains.
    • Study Tour package includes transport, accommodation and breakfast.
    • Cost: $748

    • Monday 10 August (9am - 5pm)
    • Visit up to 3 Neighbourhood Centres throughout the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area.

    • Monday 10 August (9am - 5pm)
    • Visit up to 3 Neighbourhood Centres throughout the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area.

    • Monday 10 August (9am - 5pm)
    • Visit up to 3 Neighbourhood Centres throughout the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area.

  4. Exchange Tour - Youth, Housing & Homelessness Services

    • Monday 10 August (9am - 5pm)
    • Visit up to 3 Neighbourhood Centres throughout the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area.

    • Monday 10 August (9am - 5pm)
    • Visit up to 3 Neighbourhood Centres throughout the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area.

NOTE: Pre-Conference Study Tours and Practice Exchange Tours are subject to change and availability. Delegates who select any of the above ticket items during registration will be notified immediately if there is a cancellation or adjustment to the advertised activity and whether alternative arrangements have been made.
